Canadian scientists have discovered how to generate electricity - by nothing more than pushing water through a fine glass tube.

As water passes through the tube, tiny amounts of glass - itself a supercooled liquid - 'dissolve' into the water. That gives the surface of the tube a positive charge, which attracts negative ions in the water. The flow of the water carries the positive ions onward, resulting in a net difference in charge between the two ends of the tube. That difference amounts to a voltage of around 10V.

Connect both ends of the tube to a circuit, and the voltage drives a current, albeit a tiny one: only one thousandth of an amp, reports University of Alberta Professor Larry Kostiuk, leader of the team that made the discovery in the Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering today.

Team member Daniel Kwok is credited with laying the ground work for the team's findings.

The team produced electricity using gravity to push the water through the tube. At a height of 30cm the water column pulled through the tube this way was enough to light a low-power bulb.

That's not enough to do any real work, but by assembling thousand of tubes together, this 'electrokinetic' technique could be used to generate useful amounts of electricity. Kostiuk told The Times that he doubts the technique will replace other forms of electricity generation, but he believes it may well one day prove useful as a way of powering microengines or recharging small electronic devices such a cellphones. ®

private investors are making a ton on interest investing with 3rd world countries and their small businesses. charging anywhere from 50% to 100%. if i had some capital i'd invest in some business, maybe have more of a say as to how the establishment is run, but offer a very low interest rate. i'll call this the wal-marting dance, and that is sweeping the crowd with unbeatable prices.

i heard some african countries, a man can live off of $100 a month, or needs that for a month, or maybe makes that each month... either way, money goes a long ways there and i think an extra $100 one month could do a lot. bring over recycling, water treating/cleaning/conserving techniques, slap a poster on the product and have media cover it. boom, you're famous, a hero, and most likely rich. if you're smart enough, you'll be rich.

let's not go fuck'n crazy here, lending out large lumps of money, but make it a slow process allowing for the owner to understand quality development practices at the same time he or she is saving money. the stronger the platform, the crazier you can build up. or whatever fuck'n anology you wanna use.

of course lying about previous experience is a must, you know, appearance is everything. it's cool though 'cause i have photoshop and a brain.

i finally figured out the meaning, the substance, behind conversations and more specifically what's needed to turn a response. basically, i understood the concepts of delivering a pitch to someone, trying to persuade she or he one way or the other, for whatever it is that's wanted by the pitcher. in other words, i know the pieces of lots of things but now i finally figured out the bigger picture, with all of the pieces fitting next to each other.

this understanding of the bigger picture in turn makes other pieces, previously not related, now somehow intertwined with now even a bigger picture. yes, it's a frick'n snow ball.

if you have no idea what i'm talking about i'll explain it for ya:

if i had a girl friend and i wanted to take her with me to a party, i would tell her, "hey, i'm going to 'insert address', did ya wanna come with me?"

under the normal status of a "dating" relationship, the average answer would be, "yes, i'd love to go!"

if we were to really guess what the answer were to be we'd be stuck thinking about the possibilities for two days because, of course, the girl would think, "why did you make plans without me in the first place", "who invited you?", "is SHE going to be there?", "i wanted to spend time with you", or "we had plans that day anyways."

anyways.

it all comes down to COST and REWARD. if you figure out the cost of the job and the reward afterwards is at least the same, if not a whole lot better, the person you're pitching to will be more willing to agree.

back to the girl friend thing: the cost is her TIME and the reward is your TIME. this shows relationships are on a fairness level and both parties need to give and take equally.

relating this concept to a business man: idea man talks to money man about new business plan he wants to pursue. idea man researches topics and calculates cost of project total. then he researches income and calculates profits. the cost is MONEY and the reward is MONEY. provide the evidence for the returns on investments. the more solid the evidence and the larger the return will also increase the likelihood of success.

where to go from here... (as in, now we know how the structure of pitching, and it's everyday use by everybody in the world. take what you know and apply it to the bigger picture)

there's endless options really but here's one:
ok, so this is the answer to why there's marketing and secondly, why there's all this bull shit and lying that are painted on products and services. the product NEEDS a good return or no deal. well then, i suppose that just makes "your product" better than their product. we just need an extra $35,000 for an actor and a tv spot to get the word out.

the other thought:
if you can understand this concept then you can start to understand the thought process behind someones actions and dialogue. question what you don't understand in a conversation (it's like buying insurance), because if you act like you know and it turns out you're lying, it not only makes you look bad but more importantly shows your weakness. show your eagerness to learn instead of weakness and hiding.

so i finally got my xmas packages in the mail, not sure where some cards are though. i wonder if somethings were lost in the mix when portland got all that snow. people, locals i guess you'd call them, say portland only owns 6 plow trucks. that's kinda hard to believe. i understand there isn't a lot of snow here in the winter but why invest in 6 trucks then. why not 4 trucks and pffft... well take the price of 2 trucks and turn that into 10 blades you can attach to the front of regular trucks. hey, it's the government, they're not planners, they're government workers. "we do simple math here".

so i got 2 packages, one from a sweetheart and the other from my mom/family. it's good to know people still love you eventhough you're miles and miles away from them. i used to not appreciate things like socks, hats, and underwear but now that i'm becoming an old man those are the best kinds of gifts you could get. Thank you everyone that sent me some christmas love, i'm in the process of card making but until then, this message will have to do.

my new year's resolution is one with some cliche baggage hang'n on it but it's fitting for me so here i sit, preaching my coming change with everyone else. yes, it's the one and only, quit smoking cigarettes for the rest of my life, resolution. the new marketing strategy i'm gonna pull is similar to those that inch halloween and christmas shopping seasons, day by day, farther away from the actual event. by this i mean my quit day is today and not actually on new years day. it's because of this, and lack of party money, i'm already planning a night in my room consisting of web surfing and after effects rendering.

the question is not, "who then will you kiss at midnight?", but rather, "who will i be kissing everyday at midnight for the rest of my life?". forget new years. it's just a day. the full moon will be out again and if you look up when it's a day off do you know, or more importantly does it matter? don't package your life like a fairy tail but rather live knowing your final out come and enjoy the days before it.

it's day... well let's see, my last cigarette was at 3am on... i can't remember the day, and i'm looking at the calander on the fridge, but that's no help because my mom already changed it to december. haha! she's funny like that i guess. hmmm... it was 5 degrees out, i remember that. ok, must've been saturday the 22nd.

its late, this i know, but i can't really sleep cause my throat's bothering me. i should know in about 5 hours though what it is, hopefully nothing too serious.

well, just to put it out there, and i'm not saying my throat has anything to do with this request but... well lets face it, life is full of surprises... and some of those surprises include death.
so, sense it's not written anywhere just yet; if i die, my computers and all the accessories go to my sister katie. cause who knows... fuck life insurance, that very term is bull shit: Life Insurance? i know what it is for but if you think about it... we should be taught early in life to save money, not spend it on wants. then you wouldn't have to worry about all the debts you have so some insurance can take care of it. take care of it as you live. its like washing the dishes. don't pile them up until you dirtied all the forks and you're forced to use those blue plastic left-overs from high school graduation. CLEAN THEM AS SOON AS YOU'RE FINISHED!!! ok, that was a rant... back to "cause who knows" and the fact i don't have a job, don't have health insurance, i've beat my lungs with those ugly cancer sticks, and i'm not friends with the operator of the Empire Builder... so who knows if the dude is gonna be sober driving that train for 44 hours... or the other dude that's driving the other train... well you get it.
